Background

The Commonwealth Games, formerly the Empire Games, is organised and managed by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) and consists of 71 member countries and territories. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) is the organisation responsible for the direction and control of the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games, and for delivering on the vision of the Commonwealth Sports Movement: to build peaceful, sustainable and prosperous communities globally by inspiring Commonwealth Athletes to drive the impact and ambition of all Commonwealth Citizens through Sport.

It is an organisation headquartered and incorporated in the UK, but working across 71 member nations and territories.

It is a voluntary group of Commonwealth sports leaders committed to driving and upholding the vision, mission, values and responsibilities of the Commonwealth Sports Movement. The CGF President, elected in September 2015, is Dame Louise Martin DBE - the first female to hold this office in the history of the movement. Its Oceania regional Vice President is Hugh Graham of the Cook Islands.

FASANOC prepares and sends Team Fiji contingents to all editions of the Commonwealth Games.

Participation

  • Fiji first entered the Commonwealth in 1970 and were re-admitted in 1997 after a ten year lapse.
  • However, Fiji's entry was at the 1938 Empire Games in Sydney (Australia). It returned in 1950 to win 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze medals. They proudly lifted silver in the inaugural Rugby 7s in 1998, again in 2002 and the bronze in Melbourne in 2006.
  • Fiji was suspended from the Commonwealth on 1 September 2009, in accordance with the decision of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG) of 31 July 2009. This suspension was lifted on 14 March 2014 and they were therefore a late entry to the Glasgow 2014 programme.
  • Fiji has won a total of 6 medals at the Commonwealth Games.
