The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) would like to remind National Federations (NFs) that the Oceania Sports Education Programme (OSEP) Courses for  2022 and 2023 are targeted towards coaches and team managers who hope to be a member of Team Fiji at  any of the Games in 2023.

"We have noticed a recent  trend in the last few OSEP courses, that NFs were sending whoever is available just to tick the boxes, but we do encourage them to send relevant coaches and managers who have been identified and  most likely to travel  with their respective teams in 2023” she said.

“It is important for Team Fiji to send athletes that are coached and managed by competent individuals who have been upskilled and certified not only by OSEP but also by their relevant International Federation.”

Lorraine reminded NF’s that FASANOC has a compulsory criteria that all Team Officials must complete the OSEP Team Managers Course for management and for Coaches and trainers, the OSEP Coaching Course and Strength & Conditioning Course or have an equivalent International Federation (IF) Level 2 Certification that can be verified by OSEP.

" Team Officials who have done the OSEP Courses in 2022 and have successfully completed and graduated from these courses, do not need to re-do the OSEP courses as this will still be valid for 2022-2023," she said.

"However, certification prior to 2022 may also be considered on a case-by-case basis and subject to approval from FASANOC’s High Performance Commission, which is chaired by Talemo Waqa."

Lorraine said the objective of the OSEP courses are twofold.  Primarily a focus is to ensure the entourage accompanying the athletes understand their roles and responsibilities in supporting the athletes in the lead up and during Games times.

"The second is to ensure standardization across sports so that they apply the learning's for their own development and competitions both locally and overseas."

OSEP courses being organized are offered and targeted for the following 24 sports in 2023:

Archery, Athletics, Para Athletics, Basketball Men & Women, Beach Volleyball Men & Women, Bodybuilding, Boxing, Football Men & Women, Golf, Hckey Men & women, Judo, Karate, Netball Women, Powerlifting, Rugby 7s Men & Women, Rugby League 9’s Men & Women, Rugby Touch Men &Women, Sailing, Swimming, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, VA’A , Volleyball and Weightlifting.

This year Team Fiji has already held four OSEP courses involving coaches and managers with a further three courses earmarked for October and November including a Strength and Conditioning course and  Team Managers courses.

The three courses will target NF Coaches on the 2023 Pacific Games Program.

The OSEP courses are recognised internationally by the International Olympic Committee who through its Olympic Solidarity arm, fund the courses.

FASANOC Chief Executive, Lorraine Mar, said it was important that NFs take the opportunity to ensure that coaches and managers who are selected for Team Fiji in 2023 are well prepared to lead their teams to podium finishes at the Games.
