The Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (FASANOC) has resumed its Oceania Sports Education Programme (OSEP) courses this week with the National Team Managers Course.

Nine National Federations which include Athletics, Baseball, Basketball, Billiards and Snooker, Boxing, Cricket, Rugby Union, Triathlon and Weightlifting are currently participating in the four day workshop being held at Fiji Olympic House, Suva.

FASANOC Chief Executive Officer, Lorraine Mar, in welcoming the participants stressed the need for them to take back to their National Federations what they will learn during the four day workshop.

Lorraine said that “while the documents they produced as part of their assessments was their own work, it should also be share with their National Federations and serve as templates and training for future team officials.”

In sharing his hopes and concerns for the course, Fiji Boxing Viliame Vitukalulu said that doing the course would help him better understand how to manage athletes while on tour.

"Boxing is an individual sport and this course will help me understand how to better manage and assist the individual athletes achieve what they hope to achieve," he said.

Viliame said as a former athlete that has represented the country, he also at times had to manage the team.

Weightlifting Fiji President, Della Shaw, said the course would help them become better managers of athletes.

"We as a federation thought that the course would help us so we are grateful that Weightlifting Fiji's board is here to learn and better ourselves," she said.

Workshop facilitator and OSEP Mentor Talemo Waqa urged participants to have an open mind set during the four day course.

Talemo said he understood that each National Federation had its own way of doing things but the course was to enhance their skills and provide an opportunity to learn from each other.

"At the end of the day it is the athlete who should be your main focus," he said.

FASANOC was happy to be able to continue its capacity building for National Federations as it looks forward to attending six multisport games in the coming Olympiad, which includes the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, 2022 Commonwealth Games, 2023 Pacific Games and 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
