FASANOC would like to send our sincerest condolences to the family of 2017 Fiji Olympic Order recipient, long serving Sports administrator and Fiji Athletics President Vuli Waqa.

Vuli Waqa has been heavily involved in the sport of Athletics in Fiji since 1979.  He has a combined total of over 40 years of service as either a Technical Official and/or an International Athletics Association Federation (IAAF) lecturer for technical officials around the region. During this time Vuli served 10 years as Athletics Fiji President and or Secretary. He simultaneously held positions as the Vice President of Oceania Athletics Association (OAA) for 5 years and Secretary of the Fiji Secondary Schools’ Athletics Association from 1982-2013.  His dedication to the sport of athletics in Fiji has seen him awarded:

–  2002 Oceania Merit Award by OAA

–  2005 IAAF Veteran Pin

–  2006 FASANOC Distinguished Service Award

–  2008 IOC Youth Development Award

–  2013 Fiji Sports Awards Administrator of the Year

–  2014 Fiji Sports Awards Technical Official of the Year

–  2015 Life Member Oceania Athletics Association

Vuli officiated as a Technical Official at the Pacific Games and Oceania Championships from 1998-2015, World Junior Athletics Championships in Sydney in 1989, Olympic Games in Sydney 2000 and the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

One of Vuli’s most notable legacies is his Competition Director role in the annual Fiji Secondary Schools’ Coca Cola Games which has grown to be the largest high school athletics competition in the southern hemisphere.

We would like to thank Vuli for his continued commitment, dedication and contribution to Athletics in Fiji and around the Oceania region and may he Rest In Peace.
