FIJI GAMES: Suva managed to finish at the top of the medal tally as Badminton rounded up their competitions during the Fiji Games at the Yat Sen Hall today.

It was a close finish as Suva won 2 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals, edging Rotuma who won 2 gold and 1 bronze.

Finishing in third place was Lami with 1 gold, while Nasinu and Lautoka tied at fourth place with a 1 silver and 1 bronze medal respectively.

Competition controller Andra Whiteside said the Fiji Games was a successful event for Badminton as not only did players step up their game but there were also a few upsets.

“Competition was great; we saw a lot of tough matches throughout the day,” Whiteside said.

“This is also the last trial for the Pacific Games and everyone stepped up which was really great to see, everyone played some really good badminton and they were in great spirits.

“There were a few upsets in today’s games which was great because it shows us that a lot of our players are coming up now and challenging a few of our top players.

“We saw in the men’s finals, Rotuma’s Ahmed Ali taking out our number one men’s singles player Liam Fong of Suva which was a surprise for everyone.

“But overall it was a successful Fiji Games for Badminton, the people behind organising this event played a crucial role and we are happy that we had so many participants come out and join.

“We had juniors, older players and social players come out so that was a really good plus for us.”
