FASANOC's Medical Commission was pleased with the turnout by athletes and officials at Team Fiji's first medical screening held over the weekend.

Close to 500 athletes and officials hoping to make the team to the 2019 Pacific Games completed their first medical screening at the Fiji National University Pacifica campus on Saturday 19/01/2019.

Commission Chair Doctor Jone Nasome said the medical team which included physiotherapists and doctors, were very thorough in their checkups.

"This first medical screening is just to gauge where are athletes and officials are in terms of health and wellness and if we need to make any suggestions with regards to their health," he said.

"Like it has been mentioned before we do not want to rule out any official or athlete that wants to travel to the games at this time."

Dr Nasome said the medical team is always ready to help and support athletes and officials when they require them so that they are able to compete at their best come Games time.

Dr Nasome said there would be a second medical screening a month before Team Fiji travels to the Games.

Team Fiji Chef de Mission Patrick Bower said the turnout from athletes and officials was quite encouraging.

"The turnout from athletes and officials shows their commitment to being at their competing best for the 2019 Pacific Games," he said.

Mr Bower said the medical screenings were an important part of Team Fiji's preparations for the 2019 Pacific Games.

"All Team Fiji officials were informed of the medical screening and the huge turnout was very encouraging and a positive sign that athletes and officials are taking their health seriously," he said.

Mr Bower said some sports were unable to make the medical screenings due to their participation in weekend trials while other athletes and officials were overseas.

He also encouraged all those wanting to be a part of Team Fiji to the 2019 Pacific Games to go through a medical screening as it was a requirement for selection.

Mr Bower also thanked the Doctors and Physiotherapists who had volunteered and attended to the athletes and officials throughout the day.
