Fiji Weightlifters Ready For Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships

International Olympic Committee Olympic Scholarship for Athletes “Paris 2024” recipient Taniela Rainibogi will lead an impressive lineup of talented athletes at the 2023 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Gautam Buddha University in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, India from July 12 to 16, 2023.

Among the notable athletes are Nehemiah Elder and Elizabeth Chute, the youngest lifters and first-time national representatives. Nehemiah, aged 14, and Elizabeth, aged 16, are brimming with excitement and enthusiasm as they gear up for their final training session before the competition.

"Their passion and dedication serve as a testament to the bright future of weightlifting in Fiji," said Team Manager Sera Vakaloloma.

"We also have seasoned athletes like Taniela and talented juniors Leyna-May Domonatani, Daniel Shaw, and Miriama Taletawa, who have all represented Fiji at various competitions regionally and internationally including the latest Mini Games in Saipan last year," she said.

"These athletes have honed their skills and are eager to test themselves against the best in the Commonwealth."

Sera said Ateca Vira, a promising youth lifter, rounds out the team, bringing her exceptional talent and unwavering determination to the forefront.

"Her participation showcases the depth of talent and commitment within the Weightlifting Fiji National Team," she said.

The Weightlifting Fiji National Team is led by Head Coach Henry Elder, Technical Coach and President Della Shaw and Team Manager Sera.

Sera said the wealth of experience and expertise that both Henry and Della brought to the team would ensure the lifters received top-notch guidance and support throughout the championship.

"All team members are in excellent physical condition and high spirits, eagerly looking forward to the opportunity of competing against their fellow athletes from other Commonwealth member countries.

Sera said they would like to extend their sincerest gratitude to the Australian Government through the Australian Aid Scheme that has fully funded this tour.

"Weightlifting Fiji also extends it appreciation to the Ministry of Youth and Sportsand the generous sponsors who have provided invaluable support in preparing the team for this competition," she said.
